Gladiator - Myrmillo (1)
Unpainted 28mm pewter metal miniature
The Myrmillo is named after the sea fish mormylos or after the sea snail murex, historians differ on the etymology. The Myrmillo wore a balteus, full helm, a manica on his right arm, a short greave on his left leg, and a large, 3 foot high Scutum (Shield) that totaled out to about 35 to 45 lbs of weight. Offensively they wielded 20 inch long gladius (sword) in the arena, often tied to their wrist with a lanyard. Myrmillos were paired with the smaller shield gladiators (parmularii) such as the Thraex or Hoplomachus and were the favorites of the Emperor Domitian who threw a man to the dogs for speaking out of favor of them.
