Philippines - Early WW2
U.S. Army and Philippine Scouts miniatures (28mm) for the Philippines in 1941.
On December 8, 1941, nine hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the
Commonwealth of the Philippines was attacked by the Empire of Japan. The
Philippines commonwealth had important U.S. military bases in the
islands. In 1935, retired US Army General Douglas MacArthur was
appointed to be the commanding officer of the Filipino forces and tasked
with building and training the army. He estimated would take 10 years
to build a force capable of deterring threats. As tensions rose with
Japan, MacArthur was reactivated in the summer of 1941 by the U.S. Army,
but received scarce support to enhance preparations. In December,
MacArthur and the Filipino and American forces under his command were
caught unready. Very quickly the air forces were destroyed on the
ground. The American-Filipino forces on the island of Luzon fell back
toward the Bataan Peninsula. They were besieged on the island of
Corregidor, which was surrendered in May 1942.
