This is the 2nd edition of “Saurian Safari”, our popular tabletop dinosaur-hunting game, which was originally designed for use with the 25/28mm scale models produced by the Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company, and now BrigadeGames has a range of Africa figures that are great for Saurian Safari or Mammalian Mayhem. (It should perhaps be pointed out here that “25/28mm” is the approximate height of a human figure in this scale - most of the dinosaurs are a lot bigger than that.) When it first appeared in 1999 “Saurian Safari” was envisaged as part of a much more wide-ranging “Victorian Mesozoic” alternative history campaign system, but it has proved so popular in its own right that it has taken on a life of its own, and has since accumulated two supplements containing a lot of additional animal and weapon data (including a selection of prehistoric mammals).
All of these books are now combined in this edition into a more player-friendly format, which will
hopefully be easier to use (as well as being better value for money). Another drawback of the original
approach was that we tried to cater for all the creatures which might be met with in an alternative
world, so that players needed an unrealistically large and expensive model collection in order to use
the encounter tables properly. Here we have provided a wider selection of tables, some of which now
incorporate a range of options under broad headings, which will enable you to narrow down the
possibilities to fit in better with the models you have available. Luckily, as well as giving the book a
new colour cover to bring it into line with the appearance of our most recent publications, we have also
managed to find space for many of Mark Jones’ entertaining cartoons from the 1st Edition.

“Mammalian Mayhem” was originally conceived as a follow up to our popular “Saurian Safari” dinosaur hunting rules. It is not just another supplement to “Saurian Safari” though, but a complete rule system in its own right, so it is not necessary to have a copy of “Saurian Safari” in order to play “Mammalian Mayhem”. As the title suggests, it enables the players to expand their hunting activities into the Age of Mammals, and to take on a wide range of quarry - living, extinct or simply mysterious - from prehistoric sabre-tooths to modern African big game. We took the opportunity to produce a 2nd Edition when we sold out of the first print run, partly because we wanted to give the rule book a new look to bring it into line with the rest of our recent publications. We have included a wider selection of weapons and quarry, especially the prehistorics, to take advantage of the much greater variety of models now becoming available. A few other minor changes have also been introduced - notably the random movement system for hunters, which we think adds a bit more uncertainty and excitement to the game.
The main difference from “Saurian Safari” is that mammals compensate for being punier than dinosaurs by using their larger brains, and so have to be able to respond more flexibly to different circumstances. So the approach used in the dinosaur hunting rules - in which the players all take on the identities of the hunters, while their quarry reacts in rigid pre-programmed ways - has been replaced here by one in which the animals themselves play a much more active role.
Each player may choose to control either a human hunter character or an animal. The hunters move, shoot etc. in a fairly conventional “skirmish wargame” sort of way, by means of dice, while for the animal players we have introduced a card driven system, using an ordinary pack of playing cards.
